Thankfully, Felix Hernandez is a dominant Seattle sports star

I have this argument with friends all the time. Actually, its more like a lament.

When the Sonics left four years ago and became the Oklahoma City Thunder, the most unfortunate part was that we lost Kevin Durant, who was destined to be the citys next transcendent star, an enchanting athlete who would brand Seattle sports in a positive manner, the next Ken Griffey Jr., Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Ichiro, etc., in terms of making us undeniably relevant. Without Durant, Seattle is currently a city without a superstar, and not coincidentally, its a city without a marquee team.

But the argument is where Felix Hernandez fits into this conversation. Hes something short of a superstar, but hes one of the best pitchers in baseball, a 2010 Cy Young Award winner, and at 26, hes only getting better and more mature.

Does he influence winning? Well, thats the problem. The Mariners have yet to even sniff the playoffs with King Felix, but in baseball, its impossible to expect a starting pitcher, who makes 32-35 starts a year, to carry a team. Hernandez has done his job. Over the past four seasons, Hernandez has a 49-32 record with a 2.67 ERA, 13 complete games and 722 strikeouts in 774 1/3 innings. And during this span, the Mariners have just one winning season and an overall record of 225-290 (.437 winning percentage). Hernandez is the ace of, well, what?

What are the Mariners? A frustrating, humiliating mess most of the time. But on nights that King Felix pitches, theyre a competent baseball team, even though theyve blown so many possible victories over the years by not scoring enough runs to support his stellar pitching.

So, the easy argument– which I disagree with –is to say that Hernandez isnt a superstar because the Mariners dont win enough, and he isnt a cant-miss performer who dominates highlight reels across the nation. Even though hes been among the games best for a while, Im not sure the nation even understands how great this kid is because others probably look at his record and think, Whats the big deal? Of course, pitchers can only control half of what it takes to win, and Hernandez has done enough over the past four years to have much more than 49 victories on his record. But these circumstances shouldnt limit how special he is, not to the people who watch him regularly and rely on him to provide some rare Mariners excellence once every five days.

King Felix, the ace of despair, was at his best Saturday night, throwing a one-hitter over eight innings, striking out nine Minnesota batters, as the Mariners snapped a seven-game losing streak with a 7-0 victory at Safeco Field.

In his last five starts, Hernandez is 2-1 with a 0.95 ERA. Only one of his seven starts this season has been sub-standard. On April 7 against Oakland, in the middle of a stretch of three straight starts against the same team, Hernandez allowed six earned runs in 6 1/3 innings. Since then, he has been ridiculous. Overall, Hernandez is 3-1 with a 1.89 ERA, and really, he should be 6-1. In his three no-decisions, King Felix has an 0.75 ERA.

This incredible early start is a positive sign for a pitcher who traditionally picks up steam as the season progresses. Its even better for local sports fans who are starved for excellence. Hernandezs numbers speak for themselves, but during the prolonged period of transition in Seattle sports, its appropriate that we say more to Hernandez for what he has done to entertain the frustrated masses.

Thank you.

Transcendent superstar or not, youre special. Youre the best in Seattle right now.

Can Singapore serve as economic model for NKorea?

May 12, 2012

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Less than two weeks after being punished with new U.N. sanctions, North Korea has sent its ceremonial head of state and two top economic officials to Singapore and Indonesia on a trip that appears aimed at drumming up outside investment.

Kim Yong Nam, president of the Presidium of North Korea’s parliament, arrived in Singapore on Friday for his first reported trip overseas since late leader Kim Jong Il’s December death. He was to head Sunday to Indonesia with two senior economic officials, according to North Korean state media. Kim, no relation to Kim Jong Il and current leader Kim Jong Un, often represents North Korea abroad.

The weeklong journey comes on the heels of new U.N. sanctions imposed on North Korea for launching a long-range rocket last month in defiance of Security Council resolutions banning it from nuclear or ballistic missile activity. North Korea insists the launch was an attempt to send a satellite into space.

Washington suspended an agreement to provide North Korea with food aid, and the North could face more punishment if it follows the launch with an atomic test as it did in 2006 and 2009.

Even as it has risked punishment by developing missiles, North Korea also has focused since 2009 on improving its economy by developing light industry, drawing foreign investment and expanding trade.

With ties remaining tense with South Korea, North Korea is looking elsewhere to build economic partnerships.

Singaporean entrepreneurs already are supplying the well-to-do in Pyongyang with everything from Heineken beer to Hello Kitty, and have introduced some locals to hamburgers, fried chicken and Belgian waffles.

North Korea is looking to diversify its trade, import natural resources and export consumer goods with Southeast Asia’s help.

Singapore offers an attractive model for attracting direct foreign investment, while resource-rich Indonesia could give pointers on how to make money from minerals, said Cho Bong-hyun, a research fellow at the IBK Economic Research Institute in Seoul.

Kim Yong Nam visited a food factory and an electronics manufacturer in Singapore on Saturday, the official Korean Central News Agency said.

The North Koreans may also use the trip to Singapore to learn how to develop a successful growth model that does not threaten the political power structure, said Andray Abrahamian, executive director of Choson Exchange, a Singapore-based nonprofit group that has provided business and legal training for about 200 young North Korean government officials and students.

“Singapore’s development trajectory has been attractive to a number of countries who are interested in maintaining political stability to manage rapid economic growth,” he said.

Trade and investment between North Korea and Southeast Asia have waxed and waned over the past 12 years.

From 2000 to 2006, trade with 11 Southeast Asian countries — including Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand — accounted for 10 to 12 percent of North Korea’s foreign trade. But after Singapore and others pledged to enforce U.N. sanctions, trade with the region dropped to less than 2 percent in 2010, according to the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy in Seoul.

North Korea has sought to reverse that trend. In 2010, Singapore was North Korea’s sixth-largest trade partner, according to the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency in Seoul. And in recent years, North Korea has developed two special economic zones, in Rason in the northeast and Hwanggumphyong in the northwest, and is looking to Singapore for guidance, analysts said.

“Since the 1990s, North Korea has consistently said that it sees Singapore as a model for its special economic zones,” said Lim Soo-ho, a researcher at Samsung Economic Research Institute in Seoul.

Accompanying Kim is Ri Kwang Gun, who heads the Joint Venture and Investment Commission in charge of attracting foreign investment.

North Korea could also try to sell itself to manufacturers looking for cheap labor as well as boost exports of its consumer products, analysts said. The other economic official in the North Korean delegation is An Jong Su, the minister of light industry, KCNA said.

South Korea, meanwhile, is set to negotiate with China on a free trade agreement that may lift tariffs on products made in North Korea’s special economic zones, making investment in North Korea more favorable.

“North Korea has the cheapest labor in the world, less than half of China’s (rates),” said Lim. “Foreign investors can manufacture goods in North Korea and export them to China.”

Indonesia, meanwhile, may be able to provide guidance on how North Korea can exploit mineral resources that the North Korea Resources Institute in Seoul estimates are worth more than $10 trillion, analysts said.

Indonesia has had strong ties with North Korea since 1964. In 1965, when late North Korean founder Kim Il Sung paid Indonesia a visit, President Sukarno presented him with an orchid dubbed the Kimilsungia.

On Tuesday, North Korean and Indonesian officials signed an agreement to share news stories, photos, video and TV footage, and eventually swap journalists, Indonesia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Fragile confidence and weak economy the cause of fall in activity

Activity in the construction sector declined markedly in April, with the monthly fall being the sharpest recorded since October 2011. Fragile client confidence led to falling workloads and reductions in both employment and buying activity, the Ulster Bank construction purchasing managers index figures show.

The seasonally adjusted index designed to track changes in total construction activity fell to 45.4 in April from 46.7 in March. Readings above 50 indicate an increase in activity and below 50 indicate a decrease.

Panellists reported weak economic conditions and a lack of confidence among clients as the cause of the reduced activity.

The figures show that the construction sector remains among the weakest in the Irish economy, according to Simon Barry, chief economist with Ulster Bank.

The Artistry of Science

Youve never seen a goblin spider-claw in quite the same way.

The American Museum of Natural History in New York City is currently showcasing images obtained by its scientists using an array of advanced techniques. The exhibition, Picturing Science: Museum Scientists and Imaging Technologies, features more than 20 sets of large-format prints from the many disciplines represented in the Museum including Invertebrate Zoology, which produced the image of the goblin spider.

Associate Curator in the Museums Division of Invertebrate Zoology Lorenzo Prendini, an arachnologist, uses UV fluorescence imaging to study scorpions, in this case ten different species of Opistophthalmus. (Image: copy; AMNH\L. Prendini and S. Thurston)

The striking exhibition takes as its starting point the artistic impulse often on display in scientific papers. Theres a wonderful aesthetic that goes with a scientists choice of images that find their way into scientific publication, said Mark Siddall, the exhibition curator and curator in the Museums Division of Invertebrate Zoology. Its not always the most informative image that is chosen, often it is the most visually compelling. It was my hope to capture the artistry of the scientific eye in this exhibition.

Nadine Duperre, a scientific assistant in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology, uses a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to view goblin spiders in minute detail. This detailed study allowed Museum Curator Emeritus Norman Platnick and Duperre to define two new genera, or groups, of spiders: Niarchos and Scaphios. (Image: copy; AMNH\N. Duperre)

Picturing Science features images from the Museums Divisions of Anthropology, Invertebrate Zoology, Physical Sciences, Vertebrate Zoology and Paleontology, as well as from its Richard Gilder Graduate School. A number of imaging technologies are represented: simple photography and microscopy, remote satellite sensing, and fluorescence imaging techniques including in situ DNA hybridization and confocal fluorescent microscopy. Also on display: a series of images from the Hubble telescope stitched together, in which every square millimeter has at least one star.

Tiny bacteria make their home inside leeches, providing their hosts with essential nutrients. Museum microbiologists Mark Siddall, curator in the Museums Division of Invertebrate Zoology, and Susan Perkins, associate curator in the Division of Invertebrate Zoology, use a technique called fluorescence in situ hybridization to uncover this relationship. (Image: copy; AMNH\S. Perkins)

Siddall sees the exhibition as part of a unique moment where the gulf between art and science isnt nearly as great as we might once have presumed indeed where the two freely intermingle in an ever broader cultural space. Were in an interesting period in which there is quite a bit of art that is science-referential like Charles Lindsays work and where theres a lot of science and technology being brought to the creation of art, he said. Picturing Science is something different from these, though. Its not art about science or the science of art, but rather the artistry of science.

Does he have a favorite image? I like the diversity most, he said. I do have a fondness, of course, for the one depicting endosymbiotic bacteria in leeches in full fluorescent regalia.

The exhibition, housed in the Museums second-floor Akeley Gallery, runs until June 24th. Check it out if youre in town.

Chambers artistry historically significant

The artistry of Charles Bosseron Chambers (1882-1964) was historically significant for the Catholic community in the early 20th century.

The reason was because it expressed Catholic immigrant piety in a particular American way, according Jerry Vigna, associate theology professor at Alvernia University.

The European Catholic immigrants who arrived early in the last century wanted to be part of a new culture even as they suspected its occasional anti-Catholic tendencies, Vigna said.

Vigna said Chambers art, like Norman Rockwells, was as much illustration as art and focused on Catholic aspirations just as much as Rockwells work focused on the homespun or noble.

One of those aspirations was the honor of having sons and daughters enter the priesthood and religious life, Vigna said. Chambers captured that hope in his paintings, Here I Am, and Christ Calling a Young Man.

In each, a properly dressed young man is shown looking piously at the crucified Christ and Christ as the Sacred Heart, an important Catholic devotion, respectively.

Vigna said Chambers most famous work, Light of the World, shows Jesus as a boy.

Light-haired with blushed cheeks, the childs soft eyes and curls convey the innocence of Rockwells America in a Catholic devotional context, he said.

A show of heart and artistry

During most of the regular season the LA Kings were the team lurching from crisis to crisis trying to make the NHL play-offs, but since the post-season began its more the Canucks using this act.

Last night the man who was heavily into crisis management was none other than Cory Schneider who kept this flickering season alive with what would be considered a stunningly exceptional performance except for the fact he does it almost every time he takes the net, particularly on the road.

His appearance in the goal had been the big commotion prior to the start of Game 4 but the kid who has now clearly out-stripped Roberto Luongo as the teams No. 1 rewarded this particular lurch of panic to put him into the lineup before Game 3 with two terrific displays of the cord cottage artistry.

And the question has to be asked: If he was good enough to be the goaltender for what could have been the last game of the season, why wasnt he in to start this series?

Did it take more than 82 games to reach the conclusion that he is their best goaltender at this moment?

While the Canucks showed terrific fight to come back into the game after they tried to hand the series to the Kings, who refused to accept the gift, the start of this one was astounding in its lack of energy and down-right confusion.

Yes, confusion and indifference, the start so slovenly you had to wonder whether the team will be happy or upset with Schneider that he pro-longed this affair with 43 saves. And here of course were being facetious, but seriously, how can a Presidents Trophy-winning team that was threatening to become the first ever in the history of the league to be swept in the first round come out with a start like they did?

Alex Burrows had no idea. Most didnt want to talk about it except Schneider, but whats new there.

Thats what goalies are for, he said. Its your job to be there until the team finds its legs. Its rhythm and thats what I tried to do.

And yes, confusion. For some reason it was determined early in the game that Samme Pahlsson is no longer good enough to take defensive zone faceoffs in his own end – even on the left side – after hed been doing that job down the stretch of the regular season.

So Manny Malhotra was added to the line, but evidently nobody had bothered to inform Chris Higgins and the Canucks found themselves with four forwards on the ice. Higgins had to slink to the bench in embarrassment.

Mannys hot, I guess, said Pahlsson, apparently a little bewildered by the change. I guess we forgot to tell Chris what was happening.

But if the confusion was bad, so was the effort and attentiveness early. It could easily have been a three or four goal lead had Schneider not been as locked in as somebody under house arrest. It looked as though the players looked at each other after one period and said to themselves, Hell, if hes going to play like that maybe we should at least try.

Sure enough, before it was all over they got not only that one period Alain Vigneault was looking for, they got some power-play attempts and for this one night at least, they remembered how it used to function.

Danny makes such a difference, said captain Henrik Sedin. We need those little plays like that back pass. Thats what we do and when hes not in the lineup you tend to go to the more basic plays like hold the puck and back to the point for a shot there and thats just what theyre (the Kings) are waiting for.

It was beautiful to watch, the kind of artistry the Sedins produce to power this team, Daniel looking like he came out of an air freshener can but sadly, its just three wins and a long way to go.

When you have a goaltender like Schneider, however, striving to add your name to that historical list of three teams which have recovered from 3-0 deficits, it may not be a total waste of vacation time.

An older, wiser Lang Lang brings artistry to the Opera House

Time was when the only non-operatic events Lyric Opera would present were vocal recitals by the glamorous likes of Luciano Pavarotti and Marilyn Horne. But those days are gone, just as the vocal recital as a commercially viable genre appears to be on life support.

So Lyric went in another direction Saturday night at the Civic Opera House, hosting the first piano recital I can recall ever having been presented under the companys auspices that of the Chinese superstar pianist, Lang Lang.

Such is his mass appeal that the 3,500-seat Ardis Krainik Theatre wassold out. With tickets scaled up to $125 ($500 got you a premium seat as well as admittance to a post-concert reception with the pianist), Lyric stood to make a nice chunk of change from the deal.
